The SharePoint connector gives the AI live access to your SharePoint sites, lists and document libraries while you chat. It's built on MCP (Model Context Protocol), the same framework behind our other connectors.
How to connect the SharePoint connector
- In a chat, go to Tools > Connectors, or open your TextCortex settings and go to Integrations permissions.
- Select Microsoft SharePoint and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Once the connector shows Connected, switch on Use in this chat to make it available in your current conversation.
The Accounts tab shows which Microsoft account the connector uses. The connector acts as that account, so it can only reach the sites, lists and files that account can already open in SharePoint.
What the connector can read
8 tools only look things up. They never change anything in SharePoint:
- List Sites: find the SharePoint sites you have access to.
- Search Content: search across SharePoint and OneDrive files, list items, lists and sites.
- List Lists and Get List Schema: see the lists on a site and the columns each list uses.
- List Items and Get Item: read entries from a SharePoint list.
- List Folder: browse the folders and files in a document library.
- Read File Content: read text, CSV, Markdown, PDF, Word (DOCX) and Excel files. Excel workbooks can be read one sheet at a time.
What the connector can change
6 tools make changes in SharePoint:
- Create Item: add a new entry to a SharePoint list. (This is for lists only. Documents go through Upload File.)
- Create Folder: create a new folder in a document library.
- Upload File: save a document to a SharePoint folder. That can be a Word report, PDF or spreadsheet the AI just created, or a file you uploaded to TextCortex.
- Update Excel Cells: change specific cells in an Excel (.xlsx) workbook stored in SharePoint. Only the cells you name are touched; every other cell, sheet, formula and format stays as it is.
- Copy File: copy a file into another folder on the same site, optionally under a new name. The original stays untouched.
- Move Item: move a file or folder to another folder in the same document library.
You decide what the AI is allowed to do
You can control every SharePoint tool individually. Open the connector and go to the Tools tab:
- Turn tools on or off: use the switch next to any tool. The AI can't use a tool that's switched off. For example, switch off Move Item if you never want the AI to reorganize your folders.
- Ask First: available for the 6 tools that make changes. The AI shows you what it's about to do and waits for your approval before anything changes in SharePoint.
- Instant: the AI runs that tool without asking. Good for low-risk actions you do often, like creating folders.
- Use in this chat: switch the whole connector on or off for the current conversation.
Our recommendation: keep Ask First on for Move Item, Upload File and Update Excel Cells, especially on shared sites. You can switch single tools to Instant later, once you trust the workflow.
Example requests
- "Find our onboarding checklist on the HR site and summarize it."
- "Create a folder called Q4 Reports in the Finance document library and upload the report you just wrote."
- "Copy the contract template into the Clients/Acme folder and name it Acme_Contract_2026.docx."
- "Move the signed invoices from the Inbox folder into Invoices/2026."
- "Read the Budget sheet in Forecast.xlsx and mark every empty cell in column O as 'missing' in red."
- "Add a new entry to the IT Requests list with the title 'New laptop' and priority High."
Good to know
- Nothing gets overwritten by accident. Upload File, Copy File and Move Item fail if a file with the same name already exists at the destination. The AI only replaces an existing file when you explicitly ask it to.
- Moves stay within one document library. Microsoft doesn't support moving items between document libraries. Copies stay within the same site.
- Upload size: files that already exist in TextCortex (uploaded or created in chat) can be up to 250 MiB. Content the AI writes directly into an upload is limited to 5 MiB.
- Excel edits: up to 50 cells per update, .xlsx files only.
- No deleting. The connector has no delete tool, so the AI can't delete files, folders or list items.
- Word and PDF files aren't edited in place. The AI can read them, write an updated version and upload it as a new file, or replace the original if you ask it to.
Write access: the 6 tools that make changes need a SharePoint connection with write permissions. If your organization restricts these permissions, your Microsoft admin may need to approve them first.
